Idioms

What is an idiom?  It is a phrase that doesn't really mean what it says.

Bob said he was getting cold feet about singing in the school play.  This doesn't really mean Bob has feet that are cold.  It means Bob is scared, nervous or worried.

Grandma has a bit of a frog in her throat today.  That doesn't mean that there is a green four legged animal in her throat.  It means her throat is sore and it's difficult to speak.

Dad told Mary to zip her lips.   Dad doesn't mean for Mary to sew a zipper onto her lip and zip the zipper closed.  Dad meant for Mary to be quiet.
