Science Olympiad is a science competition amongst Central Plains Middle School League (CPMSL) schools as part of the Academic Day activities held annually in late February.
Teamwork is a required skill in most scientific careers today, and Science Olympiad encourages group learning by designing events that forge alliances. (taken from https://www.soinc.org/info/about-science-olympiad).
Seventh and eighth grade students participate in pairs and given resources and time limits to complete a science challenge. Points are given to teams that rank 1st-6th place in the individual events, scoring based upon the goals and parameters of the challenge; overall team points are added to then award the school with the highest number of points. There is also a Science Quiz Bowl division that consists of four team members that participate in a science question "jeopardy"-type competition.
Students that have high rankings in their current science courses, positive attitudes toward the subject area, and have shown the ability to work with others are invited to be a part of the Science Olympiad team.
There are no practices for the Science Olympiad team.
