Scholars Bowl is a quiz-based competition that tests players on a wide variety of academic subjects, including Social Studies, Language Arts, Math, Science, Current Events, Fine Arts, & Sports. Each competitor holds a buzzer, questions are read, and players score points for their team by buzzing first and answering question correctly. Teams face off against each other for three rounds of sixteen questions per round. The team that wins two of three rounds wins the match.
Seventh and eighth grade students participate on the scholars bowl team, one team of only 8th graders and one team of only 7th graders. This is a four-on-four competition, but each team typically contains seven team members that are rotated from round to round.
Everyone is welcome to try out for Scholars Bowl. To qualify to be a part of the Scholars Bowl team students will take a test over multiple academic areas (listed above). Students will be selected to the team based upon their competetence in those academic areas as well as their disposition.
The Scholars Bowl season is very short, starting in mid-January and ending in early February. There will typically be two to three practices per week after school, maybe a couple more early in the sesaon (scheduled to avoid conflicts with other MS and HS events). There are five competition dates on Mondays and Thursdays, each starting at 4:30 pm and lasting about an hour and half. The season ends in early February.
